So...I'm sitting after a loooong day in the kitchen...after the appropriate steps were taken for maximum relaxation..I had the urge to hear a sugar magnolia..and it struck me...when I reach for a sugar magnolia I always skip the first 2-3 minutes of singing to get to the rave up in the middle. It's one of my favorite dead moments in shows...that simple three chord riff is so jubilant and Garcia soars...most of the time of course, energy level depending.

Besides playing..what other songs do you find you skip around a bit in?

I will listen to the whole show . But the 2nd time , I might do the let's hear the jams route,k because they need a little more attention . Truckin', Estimated , Sugaree, Half Step , Eyes, etc.

I get what you mean...my time is valuable and limited, so there are just those instances where I'd rather skip a song I've heard for the 10,745 time and get in as much jamming goods as I can! Nothing against the songs, of course. As much as I love the beauty of Weather Report, many times I feel the need to skip ahead to Let It Grow, where all the action is. Been known to skip a number of Dancin' in the Street vocals too. That's the only ones I can think of off the top of my head but I'm sure there's more.

Skipping WRS!? I would never think of such a thing. Although WRS is one of my favorite compositions ever. I always enjoy Let it Grow more with the contrasting delicateness of WRS before they really let loose.

I also often skip the beginning of Sugar Mags too, but there are plenty of versions I really enjoy the vocal parts.

Here Comes Sunshine gets the most consistent amount of vocal skips for me. There is no other song in which I despise the vocals so much, but can't get enough of the jams that they played in '73 and '74.

PITB is another one of my all-time favorites, but if I am constrained by time, I will skip the beginning, which I don't need to always hear to fully appreciate the epic jams that often ensue.

Good Lovin' also get the vocal skip sometimes. I LOVE Jerry's guitar-work on the early versions, but like many others I have grown somewhat tired of the pig raps, unless they are particularly compelling.

Oh dear God, my thoughts exactly. Skip Weather Report, are you in possession of your faculties?!!

I don't think there are any songs I skip around in. I'll skip the whole song if I feel that way about it. I think I'm on record that LLR has me lunging for the skip button every time, and others certainly on occasion, but if I'm in, I'm in, and I wouldn't usually skip around within the song unless perhaps I was looking for something in particular. Or maybe if someone here has advised to listen to a particular passage.

How about the versions with Jerry on pedal steel? Have you heard 4/11/72? Probably my single favorite one.

Yes, blasphemy, I know. Don't get me wrong, I do love WRS and I think it adds a lot of contrast. But for me it's just not usually necessary to enjoy the rest.

Come to think of it, Lovelight is a song I skip around in a bunch also, but usually I'll sign off early rather than skip ahead. My favorite part of any Lovelight is Jerry's soloing, but most of the time I could really do without Pigpens 20 min. raps, unless like deniro said, they are really interesting...

I think I'm the only person I know of who actually really likes the HCSS vocals, LOL.

sounds to me like a PERFECT example of deadheads answering another heads question!! about 1-2 were talking about skipping inside of songs while others songs in there entirety (sp?) _ gotta love it

If you skip the opening of the 12/29/77 Sugar Magnolia you are skipping the absolute best jam sequence of any Sugar Mag ever. Listen to DP 10 again and tell me I'm wrong. It's a moment of pure genius never again equaled.

awesome filler material.

IMNSHO - DP10 was the best Dicks Picks release of them all. I love that crazy just off the beat ragged glory stuff the best. That is a Sugaree to be listened to loudly and proudly, especially with non-deadhead types around, it will send them scurrying for cover.

Right, sorry, forgot that DP 10 had tracks from both those nights. In any case I've said before and I'll stand by it probably until I ever hear better but I think the opening 12 measures or so of that Sugar Mag are my favorite Jerry licks of any song anywhere.

Funny, though, if you have it loaded into iTunes you'd never know it was from 12/30. The Sugar Mag on DP 10 does come up on my iTunes as 12/29, just like the rest of the DP.

And wow, is it ever impressive. Haven't even had my coffee and I'm wide awake. (Really different time zone ... pay no attention to the 7 p.m. at the top!) Now you've done it. I have to go back and listen from Estimated now.

I know!!! I think those licks in that version the that song are the purest evocation of joy I've ever heard in any music anywhere. I've probably listened to it 200 times and every time it just makes me happy. The rest of the song is great too but there's something about the beginning that is just totally trancendant.

Unless I am really impaired - always possible - there isn't a Sugar Mag in that show?

It could be " moment of pure genius never again equaled " is the opening jam of 12/29/77 - China Cat Sunflower from DP10. The show they broke out the first China Cat since Winterland '74 farewell run. That was a cool jam out of Playing In The Band. But you could both be right. Because DP 10 has the filler from 12/30/77 - Estimated > Eyes > Saint Stephen > Sugar Magnolia at the end of Disc 3.

But it's not there - unless I'm going crazy. The songs are mislabeled, and Sugar Mag isn't there.

Sugaree! I'd be very happy never to hear "shake it shake it Sugaree" ever again but for the fantastic solos in it.
I definitely agree about Dancin', particularly versions from 76 or later.
I'd throw in The Wheel as well. And Bertha (or at least the "that why if you please I am on my bended knees" part.)

test

I don't think I do, actually, but if I did, the first that come to mind would be LLR and Stranger.
